Harpoon Block II Firing a First for Navy Capability

22 Agustus 2012

Navy’s high end war fighting capability has been given a major boost, with the successful firing of a Harpoon Block II Missile.

The missile was fired at a land target at the United States Missile Range Facility at Point Mugu California from HMAS Perth during the Anzac Class Frigate’s recent deployment to the United States.

Commodore Warfare, CDRE Stuart Mayer says the importance of the test firing shouldn’t be understated.

“These firings significantly increase the versatility and potency of one of the Navy's key weapons systems,’ CDRE Mayer told Navy News.

“We now have the ability to conduct long range attacks against land targets or ships operating in the littoral space. The demonstration of this capability and the successful upgrade of the ship’s systems to accommodate the advanced harpoon missile make a great contribution to Navy’s ability to project power to fight and win at sea and support forces ashore.”

The firings were planned in detail by the recently formed Australian Maritime Warfare Centre (AWMC), which operates from Garden Island, Sydney. The AMWC is the centre of extensive maritime warfare subject matter expertise and corporate knowledge. A specialist weapons test team from the AMWC embarked in Perth to oversee the firings.

Commanding Officer HMAS Perth CAPT Mal Wise says the firing was a major highlight for his crew. “We launched the first harpoon against a land-based target and the second against a moored target very close to the beach. Both missiles hit their marks, “CAPT Wise said.

“We knew we were playing a key role in what was a very significant event. There was a lot at stake. So when we received confirmation that the Missile had hit the target, the team was very excited and more than a little relieved. This success represents a great deal of hard work and focused effort by the Crew of Perth”

The firing is the culmination of two inter-related projects. Project C 1348 Phase A sought to deliver a Harpoon firing capability to Anzac Class Frigates. Joint Project One Phase R aimed to upgrade the Harpoon to a Block Two Standard.

Prior to the firings, HMAS Perth completed the first phase of an upgrade to improve her weapon systems and sensor arrays. The improvements under the Anti-Ship Missile Defence (ASMD) upgrade include a new Australian designed and built digital Active Phased Array Radar and increased performance for the existing combat management system. On 28 November 2011 the Government announced that the ASMD upgrade would be fitted to all Anzac Class frigates over the next five years.

HMAS Aruntais the second ship to undergo the ASMD conversion which began at BEA Henderson in Western Australia in April this year.

The Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) sent six F-15SGs and a Gulfstream 550 airborne early warning (G550-AEW) aircraft for the first time to Exercise Pitch Black, from 27 Jul to 16 Aug. Held in Darwin, Australia, the multilateral air combat exercise is conducted once every two years and hosted by Australia.

Besides the RSAF, other participants include the Indonesian Air Force, the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF), the Royal New Zealand Air Force, the Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF), the United States Air Force, and the United States Marine Corps.

On the RSAF's objectives at this year's exercise, RSAF exercise director Senior Lieutenant Colonel Lim Chee Meng said: "Through working together with the other platforms from the other participating air forces, we hope to establish greater understanding and interoperability with them."

He added: "Exercise Pitch Black is a very complex and high-end training exercise which has provided some very interesting and challenging air combat opportunities for our airmen. It allows for more realistic training to hone their skills and bring out the best in them."

The exercise, which comprises day and night air combat operations and air-to-air refuelling missions, involves about 2,500 personnel and 100 aircraft. Besides the F-15SGs and the G550-AEW, the RSAF sent eight F-16C/D fighter aircraft and a KC-135R air-to-air refuelling tanker.

Said RSAF pilot Captain Max Ng: "With the greater airspace available here (in Darwin), we are able to try out new tactics. This has definitely provided us with the opportunities to explore challenging air combat scenarios for our air and ground crew. By putting together all these elements in this exercise, we are able to sharpen our operational readiness and combative edge."

On the RSAF's part in the exercise, RAAF's exercise director, Group Captain Mike Kitcher said: "We find it very easy to operate with the RSAF and, obviously, we value their participation."

The RSAF has been participating in the exercise since 1990. Exercise Pitch Black also highlights the professional cooperation between the RSAF and the other exercise participants.

Super Hornet Debut at Exercise Pitch Black

14 Agustus 2012

The Super Hornet multi-role fighters of Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) No. 1 Squadron are making their Exercise Pitch Black debut appearance.

Nine Super Hornets are operating alongside other RAAF aircraft and international participants for the exercise.

Commanding Officer No. 1 Squadron, Wing Commander Murray Jones, said the Super Hornet had brought Air Force a tremendous increase in capability at Exercise Pitch Black.

“For the first time, No. 1 Squadron has come to Exercise Pitch Black with a true multi-role capability,” WGCDR Jones said.

“Unlike the F-111 previously operated by No. 1 Squadron, the Super Hornet can fly missions which combine air-to-air against enemy fighters and air-to-surface strike against ground targets.”

The Super Hornet is equipped with advanced electronics systems which include the APG-79 Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar. This provides a continuous picture of the battlespace, whereas older mechanically-steered radars would ‘sweep’ a radar beam over the same area.

“Missions at Pitch Black can involve 60 to 80 aircraft, so it’s critical we have an uninterrupted view of what is happening in the battle space,” WGCDR Jones said.

“The coverage of the AESA radar, combined with an excellent data-link system, means that the Pilot and Weapons System Officer can have constant situational awareness of what is happening all around them, and can conduct near simultaneous air-to-air and air-to-ground attacks when required.”

The power of the Super Hornet is further extended when operating alongside other aircraft like the Wedgetail Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) aircraft, which can provide a continuous radar feed to other aircraft.

RTAF also take part in this exercise and sends their F-16A/B (photo : Aus DoD)

“With the information shared from the Wedgetail, it is almost as if they are an extension of our airplane,” WGCDR Jones said.

Exercise Pitch Black 12 will be completed by August 17. Air Force expects to declare Full Operational Capability for the Super Hornet in December.

Air Force Tanker Conducts its First Multi-National Exercise

11 Agustus 2012

The Royal Australian Air Force has deployed its newest aircraft, the KC-30A Multi-Role Tanker Transport, to RAAF Base Townsville for Exercise Pitch Black 12.

This deployment is the first multi-national exercise for the KC-30A, which is designed to perform airborne refuelling.

Measuring 58 metres in length and with a wingspan of 60 metres, the KC-30A is a heavily-modified Airbus A330 airliner.

Wing Commander Geoff Fox, Commanding Officer of No. 33 Squadron, said this deployment was a step towards bringing the KC-30A to an initial operational capability later this year.

“While we have a limited level of involvement in Pitch Black, we are conducting this deployment away from our home base to help prepare for future exercises and operations,” Wing Commander Fox said.

The KC-30A will transit to the Northern Territory skies to conduct refuelling with aircraft in the exercise.

It will unreel a hose-and-drogue from a wing-mounted pod, which is ‘plugged’ by a refuelling probe on a RAAF F/A-18 Hornet – with both aircraft travelling in formation at more than 500 kilometres per hour.

“We can take off from a base and fly to a position 1800 kilometres away, and remain in that airspace for four hours with 50 tonnes of fuel available for other aircraft,” Wing Commander Fox said.

“In a big country like Australia, we are an extremely important capability for helping other aircraft to do their job.

“Future Pitch Black exercises will see the KC-30A refuelling more aircraft, including the Super Hornet, Wedgetail, and some of our international partners,” Wing Commander Fox said.

The first two KC-30As were delivered to Air Force in mid-2011. Delivery of all five aircraft will be completed by late 2012.

The KC-30A Multi-Role Tanker Transport carries around 100 tonnes of fuel most of which can be offloaded to other aircraft.

Torpedo on Track for Navy

HMAS Darwin has successfully exercised complex ship and air launched torpedo delivery during the multinational maritime exercise RIMPAC 2012.

Firing one MK46 torpedo from Darwin and two Mk46 torpedos from embarked S-70B-2 Seahawk “Valkyrie”, Darwin demonstrated a combined ability to detect and counter a simulated submarine contact.

The seven-metre, 2700 pound MK-30 Mod 1 target, is a fully programmable underwater vehicle which simulates characteristics of a modern submarine.

Two serials also involved a Canadian CH-124 Sea King from Her Majesty’s Canadian Ship Algonquin, as well as air support from the United States and Japan.

Leading Seaman Combat Systems Operator Nicholas Miller who launched Darwin’s torpedo, said it was a career highlight.

“I was on HMAS Newcastle during RIMPAC 2010 when they successfully launched a torpedo and thought that it would be the only time I would be involved,” LS Miller said.

“Returning again and being actually able to fire the torpedo, for me was a privilege. I was both excited and relieved that it was a success – all the training and hard work for the team involved in the process paid off.”

Tactical Coordinator for Valkyrie Sub Lieutenant Tim Craig, also conducted a career first when he released the Mk46 torpedo from the helicopter.

“Conducting a simulated ASW (anti-submarine warfare) battle was a great experience to practise our core business,” Sub Lieutenant Craig said.

“Because we are an ASW squadron, RIMPAC provided us with a chance to practise our proficiencies in weapon delivery, in a layered attack with contribution from multiple partners. It was an awesome experience.”

Commanding Officer of HMAS Darwin, Commander Brian Schlegel, who also commanded and coordinated the anti-submarine warfare (ASW) serial for two ships and five aircraft, said it highlighted the professionalism and capability of Darwin’s personnel to work effectively with our partners.

“This was a significant achievement for the crew of HMAS Darwin, we achieved our objective of three torpedo engagements with successful results,” Commander Schlegel said.

“The serials highlighted great teamwork – our people ensured the safe undertaking of weapons delivery, effective communication, coordination of procedures for both the helicopter and the ship launches, all while working with our coalition partners Canada, Japan and the United States.”

Exercise tests upgraded missile defence system

HMAS Perth has completed an advanced air warfare weapons event during a multinational firing serial at Exercise Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) 2012, the world’s largest maritime exercise in Hawaii.

HMAS Perth joined HMAS Darwin in a six-ship formation with Canadian and US ships that conducted a coordinated ‘defence’ of the group against multiple target drones that flew realistic profiles against the ships.

Perth fired two evolved sea sparrow missiles at two of the four targets and employed the Australian-designed Nulka anti-missile systems to decoy another, while the US ships fired the SM 2 missile at the remaining targets.

The Commander of Australia’s RIMPAC Contingent, Commodore Stuart Mayer, said the firings mark the culmination of more than a year of painstaking planning by the ship and the Australian Maritime Warfare Centre team.

“This firing was a keystone event in demonstrating the RAN’s ability to operate with our closest allies in the most challenging of warfare situations,” Commodore Mayer said.

“Success and defeat are managed in seconds when it comes to winning the fight at sea. Perth’s team has been put to a tough test and excelled. I am very proud of what they have achieved.”

While firings of this complexity take time to analyse, initial reports suggest outstanding results which marks another important achievement for Australia’s first upgraded Anzac-class frigate.

Perthhas recently completed the Anti Ship Missile Defence (ASMD) upgrade which included the installation of an Australian-designed CEAFAR radar which is a cutting-edge phased array radar, as well as an upgraded combat system.

Perth’s Commanding Officer Captain Mal Wise said that the firings put the new system to a rigorous test and was one in which the ship and crew performed to an outstanding standard.

“This was a complex test of the CEAFAR radar and it has proven itself beyond expectations,” Captain Wise said.

“What we accomplished today is a win not only for the RAN but also for Australia’s defence industry.”

Exercise Pitch Black 12 takes off in Northern Territory

27 Juli 2012

Up to 100 military aircraft will be in the Northern Territory from July 27 until August 17 as the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) hosts international partners for Exercise Pitch Black 12.

With 2200 participants coming from across Australia, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, New Zealand and the United States, Exercise Pitch Black will be held from RAAF Bases Darwin and Tindal.

Air Commander Australia, Air Vice Marshal Mel Hupfeld, said the biennial exercise would this year feature a mix of first-time and returning participants, making it the most advanced in the event’s 22-year history.

“For the first time at Exercise Pitch Black, Australia will be fielding the Super Hornet, Wedgetail Airborne Early Warning and Control aircraft, and KC-30A Multi-Role Tanker Transport,” he said.

“The Indonesian Air Force will make its debut appearance at Exercise Pitch Black 12, and we’re very excited to see it attend with its Sukhoi Flanker fighter aircraft.

“Singapore has been a regular participant and will this year bring its F-15SG Eagle and Gulfstream G550 Conformal Airborne Early Warning aircraft,” AVM Hupfeld said.

Participants at Exercise Pitch Black 12 will utilise massive military training areas near Bradshaw and Delamere to practice offensive counter air and offensive air support operations with large formations of foreign aircraft.

“Regionally and geographically, the Northern Territory is ideally placed for exercise participants to bring together large formations of aircraft to conduct complex operations,” AVM Hupfeld said.

“Conducting Exercise Pitch Black 12 is a massive undertaking, not just for aircrews and maintainers but also for the planning that is involved.”

During Exercise Pitch Black 12, Air Force will conduct a handling display with an F/A-18 ‘Classic’ Hornet over Mindil Beach Markets on August 9. An Open Day at RAAF Base Darwin will be held on August 11 for the Darwin community.

“Air Force has a deep bond with the Northern Territory extending back to 1938, and holding these events is our way of extending a sincere thank you to the public for its support,” AVM Hupfeld said.

The Royal Australian Navy’s (RAN) Collins Class submarine HMAS Farncomb has successfully sunk a target ship, the 12,106-tonne former USNS (United States Navy Ship) Kilauea in Hawaii.

Farncomb, a Collins Class submarine, fired one Mark 48 Torpedo and achieved a hit just below the bridge of the ship as part of a sinking exercise, or “SINKEX,” at Exercise Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) 2012.

The former USNS Kilauea broke into two parts and sank about 40 minutes later.

The submarine’s Commanding Officer, Commander Glen Miles, said the firing is a significant milestone for both himself and his 60-strong crew.

“This is the result of professionalism and teamwork,” Commander Miles said.

“Those of us who drive these boats know that the Collins’ weapons systems are among the most capable in the world.”

Australiais among 22 nations attending Exercise RIMPAC that includes six submarines and 40 surface ships participating in a realistic maritime warfare scenario.

Australian soldiers from 1 RAR are also participating in the amphibious aspect of the exercise, alongside US Marines. RAAF AP-3C Orions and a Wedgetail aircraft are also providing air support.
