06 August 2010 -- The Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) and the Indonesian Navy (TNI AL) conducted a bilateral exercise codenamed Exercise Eagle, from 28 Jul to 5 Aug 2010. The exercise, the 21st in the series, consisted of both shore and sea phases, which were held in Singapore and Surabaya, Indonesia. RSN Fleet Commander Rear-Admiral Joseph Leong and TNI AL Eastern Fleet Commander Rear-Admiral Bambang Suwarto were present at the closing ceremony held in Surabaya yesterday.
Exercise Eagle 2010 involved four ships and two maritime patrol aircraft from the two navies. This was the first time an RSN Formidable-class frigate and a Diponegoro-class corvette from the TNI AL had participated in the exercise. As part of the sea phase, both navies conducted a series of exercises involving anti-surface warfare, maritime interdiction as well as search and rescue operations. RSN and TNI AL personnel also interacted in cultural and sporting events to strengthen the camaraderie between the two navies.
The RSN's participation in Exercise Eagle since 1974 highlights the excellent defence ties between the two navies. The RSN and the TNI AL share a long history of close and mutually beneficial cooperation and they interact regularly through exercises and professional exchanges.
